A Tiny World Story

Inspired by Migratory May

Welcome to the Bird Hotel

Deep inside Tiny World, tucked among the branches of an old tree, is a very special place where travelers come to rest.

Every spring, birds arrive from near and far carrying stories of oceans crossed, mountains climbed, and gardens visited.

Some stay in cozy root cottages.

Some choose rooms high among the clouds.

Some build nests out of leaves, thread, teacups, and treasures they find along the way.

And at the front desk you'll find Gilbert Waddlesworth, making sure every guest has exactly what they need.

(Especially himself. The A/C stays on.)

Day 1

The Bird Hotel Opens

Something new is growing in Tiny World...

For Migratory May, I'm building a giant bird hotel inside an old tree.

One bird. One tiny home.Every day this month.

The welcome desk is currently being run by an Adélie Penguin, who insisted on installing a tiny A/C unit for comfort.

The branches are mostly empty for now, but little doors are beginning to appear, ladders are being built, and the tree already feels like it's waiting for travelers.

I have a feeling this place is going to become wonderfully crowded.

Day 2

Mountain Quail

The first official guest has arrived.

A Mountain Quail has settled deep in the roots where the earth feels warm and quiet. Its tiny cottage is tucked beneath moss and grasses with little stone steps leading to the doorway.

Not every traveler wants the highest branches.

Some simply need a safe place close to the ground.

Gilbert has already added complimentary ice water to the lobby.

Day 3

Golden Pheasant

A flash of gold has arrived.

The Golden Pheasant chose an elegant woodland pavilion layered with leaves and feathers.

Tiny lanterns are glowing.

Paths are beginning to form.

Someone hung bunting overnight.

Tiny World has clearly decided this is now a permanent establishment.

Day 4

Indian Peafowl

The Bird Hotel has gained its first dramatic resident.

The Peafowl immediately redecorated its room near the trunk with feather-inspired patterns and colorful details.

Several neighboring birds are quietly reconsidering their own decorating choices.

Gilbert remains politely supportive while wearing earmuffs beside the air conditioner.

Day 5

Northern Wheatear

A Northern Wheatear quietly slipped into the Bird Hotel before sunrise.

Its little stone cottage is tucked between roots and rocks, easy to miss unless you're looking carefully.

Not every traveler arrives with grand entrances.

Some simply appear... and somehow make a place feel fuller.

Day 6

Building a Neighborhood

No new arrivals today.

Instead, the Bird Hotel spent the day growing around its guests.

Tiny ladders.

Flower boxes.

Signs.

Little pathways connecting every branch.

The tree is slowly becoming a neighborhood.

Gilbert has upgraded the reception desk with a tiny bell.

Day 7

Week One

The roots are no longer empty.

A few travelers have arrived carrying songs, feathers, and tiny suitcases.

There are still many branches waiting.

Day 8

Weaver Bird

The Weaver Bird has officially moved in and immediately made everyone else's nests look under-decorated.

Its beautiful hanging woven home sways beneath the lower branches.

Several birds have already stopped simply to admire the craftsmanship.

Day 9

Tailor Bird

The Tailor Bird arrived carrying leaves, fibers, and endless creativity.

Its tiny home is stitched directly into the branches with carefully sewn leaves.

Gilbert is trying unsuccessfully to organize the neighborhood alphabetically.

Day 10

Common Myna

Today's guest arrived carrying shiny objects, ribbons, buttons, and absolutely no explanation.

Its home near the trunk is becoming a delightful collection of treasures.

The other birds are pretending not to notice things slowly disappearing around the tree.

Day 11

Mallard

The Mallard requested a room with water access.

After much discussion, Gilbert approved a tiny pond beside the nest.

He now refers to it as "our luxury suite."

Day 12

Cinnamon Teal

A Cinnamon Teal quietly settled beside the little pond.

Its reed-lined nest glows with warm copper colors.

The lower branches are beginning to feel wonderfully lived in.

Day 13

Connections

No major arrivals today.

Instead...

Bridges appeared.

Lanterns were hung.

Flower pots appeared outside woven nests.

The Bird Hotel feels less like separate rooms and more like one living community.

Day 14

Week Two

The lower branches are bustling now.

Woven nests sway.

Leaf homes hide among the branches.

Tiny pathways connect one traveler to another.

Day 15

Nightingale

A Nightingale arrived just before dusk.

By evening, music drifted softly through the middle branches.

Gilbert has begun referring to this section as "The Arts District."

Day 16

Bluethroat

The Bluethroat arrived carrying berries, twigs, and an impressive amount of confidence.

Its berry-lined nest sits among flowering branches.

Gilbert has posted quiet hours with limited success.

Day 17

Canary

A Canary has chosen one of the sunniest rooms in the hotel.

Its golden doorway and flower boxes brighten the entire branch.

The Bird Hotel is becoming a neighborhood.

Day 18

Cuban Tody

The Cuban Tody arrived like a tiny jewel.

Its cheerful painted doorway is surrounded by flowers that seem to have bloomed overnight.

Gilbert calls this "healthy community engagement."

Day 19

Lilac-breasted Roller

Today's arrival may be the most colorful guest yet.

Its balcony overlooks the entire tree.

Decorating competitions have unofficially begun.

Day 20

Indian Pitta

An Indian Pitta built a moss-covered home hidden beneath flowers.

The middle branches are now layered with homes, songs, lanterns, and winding paths.

Gilbert has upgraded to a second fan.

Day 21

Scott's Oriole

The Scott's Oriole arrived with a beautifully woven home, completing the colorful middle canopy.

The Bird Hotel now feels like a true community.

Gilbert has begun wearing an official reception button.

Day 22

Bar-tailed Godwit

One of the world's great travelers has arrived.

The Godwit chose a simple room overlooking the horizon.

Some birds collect decorations.

This one collects stories.

Day 23

Red Knot

The Red Knot checked in carrying only a tiny suitcase.

Its room overlooks the upper branches where the wind is always moving.

Gilbert has started a guest book.

Day 24

Northern Harrier

The Northern Harrier selected the highest lookout platform.

Some travelers want cozy corners.

Others simply want horizons.

Day 25

Amur Falcon

The Amur Falcon settled into a breezy suite high among fluttering ribbons.

Gilbert now keeps a tiny globe beside the welcome desk.

Day 26

Bar-headed Geese

A friendly group of Bar-headed Geese arrived.

One branch immediately became the liveliest gathering place in the hotel.

Gilbert ordered extra chairs.

Day 27

Great Grey Owl

After sunset, a Great Grey Owl quietly moved into a lantern-lit hollow inside the tree.

The room appears to contain an alarming number of library books.

Gilbert suspects Hazel may know something.

Day 28

Week Four

The highest branches are no longer empty.

Travelers from distant places now fill the canopy with maps, stories, and well-worn suitcases.

Day 29

Toco Toucan

A Toco Toucan selected one of the largest canopy suites filled with sunshine and tropical leaves.

Gilbert spent much of the afternoon deciding whether its beak counted as carry-on luggage.

Day 30

Keel-billed Motmot

The Motmot chose a hidden leafy suite tucked beneath the canopy.

From below, only flashes of bright feathers can be seen.

The Bird Hotel is beginning to feel much larger than it looks.

Day 31

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Today something new opened among the branches...

The Seed Café.

After so many travelers arrived, everyone needed a place to gather, share stories, and rest their wings.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak quickly became one of the café's first regulars.

Gilbert is especially pleased because guests are no longer eating sunflower seeds at the welcome desk.

Mostly.

Day 32

Snowcap

High above the Seed Café, a Snowcap settled into a blossom-filled suite.

From this tiny perch it watches conversations drift upward through the branches while sipping nectar among the flowers.

Some rooms are grand.

Some are cozy.

This one feels magical.

Day 33

Black-chinned Hummingbird

One of the tiniest residents has finally moved in.

A female Black-chinned Hummingbird built her nest inside a teacup beside the Amur Falcon's suite.

Everyone expected problems.

Instead, they became wonderful neighbors.

Gilbert officially listed the room as:

"Small but exceptionally charming."

Day 34

Lucifer Hummingbird

Today's arrival chose one of the smallest canopy suites beneath glowing trumpet flowers.

The room hangs among blossoms that seem to shine softly at dusk.

The Bird Hotel continues to prove that magic and square footage are not related.

Day 35

Eurasian Wryneck

A Eurasian Wryneck quietly settled into one of the oldest hollows in the tree.

Its doorway twists so perfectly with the bark that most visitors walk right past.

Some rooms announce themselves.

Others wait to be discovered.

Gilbert insists he knew it was there all along.

Final Entry

The Bird Hotel is Complete

What began as an empty tree slowly filled with travelers, songs, lanterns, tiny homes, unexpected friendships, and stories from around the world.

Some birds stayed in woven nests.

Some built homes inside flowers.

One chose a teacup.

Others gathered daily at the Seed Café.

Through it all, Gilbert Waddlesworth faithfully welcomed every guest from beneath a very necessary air conditioner.

The Bird Hotel is now more than a place to stay.

It has become a place to belong.

And the guest book is never really finished.

New travelers are always welcome.

But wait... There is a secret bird, Can you find it?

If you can, email me and let me know.
